Explosion protection – ATEX

ATEX, a term derived from “ATmosphères EXplosibles”, refers to European regulations that focus on preventing explosion hazards in environments where flammable gases, vapors, mists, or substances may be present . These regulations include two main directives: ATEX 153 and ATEX 114, with the former focusing on safety in the workplace and the latter on equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres. In the Netherlands, the ATEX 153 regulations are included in the Working Conditions Act and the ATEX 114 regulations are included in the Warenwetbesluit explosieveilig materieel. Explosions can cause serious damage not only to plant and property, but also, and more importantly, to the lives and health of workers and the environment. Therefore, it is crucial that organizations, especially in high-risk industries such as the (petro)chemical industry, waste treatment, energy production, and many others, be aware of and respond appropriately to explosion hazards.
A fundamental part of ATEX regulations is the preparation of an explosion protection document (EDS), which includes a detailed assessment of explosion risks. The EVD must consider the probability of occurrence of explosive atmospheres, the presence of ignition sources, the possible interactions between processes and materials, and the magnitude of possible consequences.
Pro6com, with its deep expertise in process safety, plays a crucial role in helping companies navigate the complexities of ATEX regulations. Our services include supporting companies in identifying their obligations under ATEX 153 and 114, developing a complete EVD, and ensuring compliance with all relevant standards and legislation.
By applying advanced techniques such as Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and the use of aeShield to manage process safety information, Pro6com helps companies not only identify flammable hazards and risks and comply with ATEX directives, but also create a safer work environment.
The integration of cybersecurity measures into explosion protection management is another aspect Pro6com is emphasizing, especially given the increasing threat of cyber attacks on industrial control systems. This ensures that both physical and digital security risks are addressed, which is essential in the modern industrial environment.
For organizations in the chemical and other industries with potentially explosive atmospheres, pro6com offers a comprehensive approach to explosion safety. From initial assessment and hazard zone classification to the design of safe work practices and selection of appropriate equipment. Our experts are ready to ensure compliance with ATEX regulations and, more importantly, the safety of your employees and operations.
Pro6com understands that explosion safety is more than just regulatory compliance; it is a fundamental pillar of safe and sustainable operations. By working with pro6com, companies secure a partner committed to protecting people, processes and the planet. We partner with Paltrock ATEX and on November 24, 2024, our process technologist Remco van Lenthe will give a talk on internal ATEX at process plants.
