Process safety awareness training.

What is process safety; and what is not?

Occupational safety, machine safety, explosion safety and process safety are often mixed together. But process safety has a focus all its own: controlling risks in process plants, such as high-impact leaks, fires and explosions.

This training will give you insight into the essence of process safety and how to recognize, understand and control risks in your facility.

What you learn

This one-day course introduces you to the fundamentals of process safety. You will learn the differences between process safety and other safety domains, discover how incidents occur and how to use barriers to prevent them.

Topics covered:

  • Process safety introduction: scope and delineation
  • Difference and interfaces between occupational health and safety, ATEX and process safety
  • Typical process safety hazards and real-world examples
  • The concept of risk assessment and control
  • Basic terms: HAZOP, LOPA, MOC
  • Process safety management: overview of systems and roles
  • Case studies and discussions from the field

After this training you will be able to

  • Explain what process safety means and how it differs from other safety domains
  • Recognize and name key risks in process plants
  • Understanding how barriers work and why redundancy is critical
  • Interpreting the role of management systems and standards
  • Contribute to conversations about process safety in your own organization

For whom.

This course is designed for anyone who works with process plants and wants to understand the basics of process safety.

  • Engineers: process, production, operations, E&I, maintenance

  • Technicians: (senior) operators, maintenance engineers

  • Managers: operations, maintenance, HSE, process safety

Why process safety is critical

Process safety is about managing major risks in process plants: catastrophic spills, fires and explosions that affect not only immediate employees, but also the public and the environment. Think of incidents like Bhopal, Seveso and Buncefield – disasters with enormous impact on communities and natural areas. Unlike occupational safety, which concerns daily personal safety, process safety focuses on low-frequency events with potentially devastating consequences. It is our moral duty to protect people and the environment from hazards inherent in our industry. This training will give you an understanding of how, through systematic risk management and the application of layers of protection, we can effectively manage these risks.

From theory to practice

Process Safety Management (PSM) is not a legal requirement, but an industry standard fundamental to safe operations. PSM consists of systematic approaches such as design standards, engineering studies (HAZOP, LOPA), operating procedures and maintenance regimes. The principle: “keep the tiger in the cage” – manage the hazardous energy and substances in your facility with multiple layers of defense. Unlike ATEX, which focuses on continuous leak sources, process safety deals with low-frequency but high-impact scenarios due to equipment failure. In this course, you will learn to recognize and apply these concepts in your own work environment so that you actively contribute to safe process control.
